The Geenlee legacy started when Edmond Greenlee, a Pennsylvania farmer created and patented a line of machines designed for use in the making of wooden barrels and his twin sons Robert and Ralph became proficient coopers. In the early 1860s the Greenlee brothers moved their barrel and tool making operations to Chicago. During the Civil War the U.S. Army located a large supply center and arsenal in Chicago. The city was also a major shipping hub for the Midwest and there was a great demand for barrels and woodworking machinery.

In 1862 Robert and Ralph formed the Greenlee Brothers and Co., and began to supply tools and machinery for manufacturers of barrels and other types of wood products. Their product line included planes, saws, and shapers. Their first major invention and development was the "Hollow Chisel Mortiser" that made more accurate mortises and is still in wide use. Other ventures included The "Self Feed Power Rip Saw" and the "Railroad Tie Machining Car"

After their Chicago factory was destroyed by fire in 1897 the Greenlee Brothers relocated to Rockford Illinois where they began to make machines and tools for metal working. In 1927 a separate company was formed called the Greenlee Tool Company for manufacturing a line of quality tools for the electrical trades starting with metal knockout punches. Knockout punches were first used in the manufacturing of early vacuum tube radio chassis but are now used mostly for electrical conduit entrances. In 1986 Greenlee became a part of Textron, manufacturing Inc.
