Drivers will be more than content with the Ford Explorer's initial engine--a turbocharged 2.3-liter four cylinder that offers 300 horsepower--but a hybrid powertrain and 400 hp twin-turbo V6 are both selections as well. Despite the plethora of tech attributes and driver aids, its total package isn't nearly as smooth when compared to other middle size competitors such as the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, or Jeep Grand Cherokee L who supply even better refinement.

How exhilarating, the Explorer's sportiest model can now be enjoyed in rear-wheel drive! The King Ranch and Platinum models were then enhanced with 400 horsepower. You also get to choose between a second-row bench or two captain chairs for no extra cost. Simultaneously, the Timberline model that was added last year is available with one of those options too.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Due to its myriad powertrain and drivetrain combinations, the Explorer has varying EPA fuel-economy ratings. The rear-drive hybrid model is rated as the thriftiest overall, with estimates of up to 27 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. Adding all-wheel drive reduces the hybrid's ratings by 3 and 4 mpg, respectively. We tested one on our 75-mph highway route, where it managed only 24 mpg. Comparatively, the 400-hp Explorer ST earned 25 mpg in our testing, which beat its EPA rating by 1. We also tested the four-cylinder Explorer with all-wheel drive. Interior, Comfort, and CargoWhile the cabin may not be particularly inspired aesthetically, it is practical and cozy in the first two rows. It's relatively simple to get into the standard third row due to a feature that shifts your second-row seat out of the way at just one touch of a button. Unfortunately, older children or adults will find this seat uncomfortably close to the floor for extended periods. Rivals such as Chevrolet Traverse and Volkswagen Atlas offer more comfortable third rows .
