Illinois Clean Coal Project, FutureGen 2.0Project: FutureGen 2.0Owner: FutureGen Alliance Cost: $1.65 Billion Location: Morgan County IL FEED Contract: Babcock & Wilcox Construction Jobs: 1600 Construction Start: Early 2914 Operation: 2017 Rev. Oct. 2013 After several years of on-again and off-again decisions resulting form politics, financing, and environmental studies the Futuregen 2.0 clean-coal project is green-lighted. The Babcock & Wilcox Company has been chosen for Front-End Engineering and Design Work. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2014. FutureGen 2.0 is a public- private partnership project. It is expected to create about 620 permanent jobs and over 1,600 construction jobs. Construction is scheduled to start in 2014 and the plant is expected to come on-line in 2017. The $1.65 billion project will include the retrofitting of the Meredosia Energy Center, an existing coal-fired power plant. In addition there will be an underground CO2 storage facility and a 10 inch, 30 mile pipeline from Meredosia Energy Center to the storage site near Ashland. The FutureGen Alliance is a non-profit partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop near-zero emissions coal technology. The membership includes major players in the coal industry. Meredosia Power Station is in the Meredosa village in Morgan County IL about 20 miles west of Jacksonville IL. Morgan County has a population of approximately 36,000 people. Meredosa is situated on the East bank of the Illinois River and about 3 miles West of U.S. highway 67 via IL-104. |
